The Red Van, a joint art project by UK based artists Chiara Williams and Jay Rechsteiner, is a stealth camper vehicle that has been converted on the inside, but still looks like an ordinary working van on the outside.
From the 12th of July 2015 Chiara and Jay will be travelling across Europe together with their baby Delphine Anaïs Bohème in the Red Van which will not only be their mobile home but also a studio and gallery space. This will be their first road trip art residency.
The Red Van has three distinct functions:
- Mobile Home (Stealth home)
- Mobile Studio (Stealth Studio)
- Mobile Gallery (Stealth Gallery)
Apart from being a mobile unit that serves as a means of travelling, a place for working and a place for sleeping, it is a nomadic sculpture. It forces the 'inhabitants' to adapt to a new life-style and might therefore have an impact on their art practice. Travelling and sleeping incognito affords some anonymity, safety and flexibility. The fact that the van is big and red, with yellow and red reflective chevrons on the back, and flashing lights on the roof, makes it rather conspicuous, and so not very stealthy at all...so the names Stealth Home, Stealth Studio and Stealth Gallery are a little bit self-conscious and a little bit ridiculous.
