Plant

studies/paintings: based on field trip through Malaysia and Thailand

material: acrylic and ink on sugar paper

In search of clarity and a fresh perspective for my artistic endeavors, I embarked on a journey to Malaysia and Thailand. Two days before my departure, I stumbled upon the Tibetan Book of the Dead, a cherished favorite of my late mother's, and decided to bring it along. It proved to be a challenging yet rewarding read, prompting me to delve into the realms of Buddhism during my travels. Enthralled by the rich culture, delectable cuisine, and captivating architecture, I documented my experiences through drawings, creating a book of ideas for future artistic projects.

The lush plant life in the region left an indelible impression on me. The abundance and rapid growth of plants in the perfect climate fascinated me. Capturing this awe and the warmth I felt in the embrace of nature, I made numerous drawings during my travels. However, upon my return to the studio in the midst of global political chaos, I realized my initial artistic plans were not resonating with me.

Recalling the solace I found in nature, I shifted my focus to painting plants on sugar paper using acrylic and ink. Despite initially planning to transfer these works to large canvas with oil, I found a distinct charm in the papery texture, leading me to continue the series of potted plant paintings. The process became a therapeutic escape from the tumultuous political landscape, allowing me to immerse myself in the simple joy of tending to plants and translating that serenity onto paper.
